Woolens & Winterwear: Storing Them Right After Bengaluru's Short Winter
Bengaluru's winter is short, so your good woolens and jackets spend most of the year in storage. That long dormant stretch — through a humid monsoon — is exactly when moths, mildew and musty smells do their damage. Store them right and they'll last decades.
Clean before you store — this is the big one
Moths are drawn to sweat, food and body-oil residue, not the wool itself. A jumper that looks clean can still be a moth magnet. Always dry clean or launder woolens before putting them away for the year — this single step prevents most moth damage.
Fold, don't hang
- Hanging stretches knitwear out of shape under its own weight. Fold sweaters and store flat.
- Structured coats and blazers can hang, on wide wooden hangers, with room to breathe.
Keep the pests and damp out
- Store in breathable cotton bags or boxes, never sealed plastic — plastic traps monsoon moisture and causes mildew.
- Use cedar blocks or neem leaves as natural moth repellents; avoid mothballs touching fabric.
- Add silica-gel sachets to fight Bengaluru's humidity.
- Air the storage box on a dry day mid-season.
Bringing them back out
Give woolens a few hours to air before wearing, and steam rather than iron to lift creases and refresh them.
