How Often Should You Dry Clean a Suit?
It's a common myth that a suit should be dry cleaned after every wear. In fact, over-cleaning shortens a suit's life — the solvent and pressing gradually flatten the wool's natural loft. But under-cleaning lets odour, sweat salts and dust set in. Here's the balance.
The rule of thumb
- Business suits worn regularly: every 4–5 wears, or roughly once a month.
- Occasion suits worn rarely: once or twice a season, and always before long storage.
- Spot a stain or spill: treat it promptly — don't wait for the next scheduled clean.
Between cleans, do this
- Brush the suit after each wear to lift dust.
- Air it on a wide wooden hanger for a few hours before returning it to the wardrobe.
- Steam to release wrinkles and odours instead of dry cleaning.
- Rotate between two suits so each rests between wears.
Always dry clean the jacket and trousers together
Cleaning only the trousers (which wear faster) leads to a visible colour mismatch over time. Keep the pair in sync.
