How to Clean Pet Beds, Blankets & Carpets (Without the Smell Coming Back)
Your pet’s bed, blanket and favourite carpet soak up more than you’d think — fur, dander, drool, mud and body oils that ordinary washing just smears around. Here’s how to get them genuinely fresh, and why the odour keeps coming back when you don’t.
Why the smell returns
Pet odour lives in the oils and proteins trapped deep in the padding and fibres — not just on the surface. A short cold wash wets those oils without lifting them, so the fabric smells fine damp and then turns musty as it dries. Real odour removal needs de-hairing first, then a proper soak that breaks down the oils, then thorough drying.
Before it goes in the wash
- De-hair first. Vacuum or use a rubber glove to pull off loose fur — wet fur turns into felted clumps that clog machines and trap smell.
- Shake out grit. Beds and carpets hold sand and mud in the base; knock it out outdoors.
- Check the filling. Foam inserts and orthopaedic pads often can’t be machine-spun — they need hand cleaning and slow drying.
Washing that actually works
- Use a pet-safe, fragrance-light detergent — strong perfumes irritate sensitive skin and paws, and only mask odour.
- Wash pet fabrics separately from your clothes.
- Dry fully. Any leftover moisture in padding is what breeds the musty smell — pet bedding needs longer, warmer drying than normal laundry.
What to leave to the pros
- Orthopaedic and memory-foam beds — the cover and the core need different treatment.
- Large carpets and rugs — too heavy to clean evenly at home; these are cleaned by the square foot and dried flat.
- Set-in odour or matted fur — needs a deep pre-treatment and controlled drying.
