How to Care for and Store Your Silk Sarees
A good silk saree is an heirloom. Treated well, it outlives trends and gets passed down. Treated carelessly, the zari tarnishes and the silk weakens. Here's how to keep yours pristine.
Cleaning
- Never machine wash or home wash pure silk — water spots the fabric and dulls the zari.
- Always dry clean silk sarees, and clean them before long storage (invisible sweat and food residue attract insects and yellow over time).
- Clean once a season if worn regularly, or once before you put it away.
Folding & storage
- Refold along different lines every few months — silk cracks and tears along permanent fold lines, especially at the zari.
- Store in a cotton or muslin cloth, never plastic — silk needs to breathe; plastic traps moisture and yellows it.
- Keep away from direct sunlight, which fades natural dyes.
- Tuck in a few cloves or neem leaves as a natural insect repellent — avoid mothballs directly touching the fabric.
Bengaluru's monsoon enemy: humidity
Our long, damp monsoons are hard on silk. Damp cupboards breed mould and mustiness. Air your sarees on a dry day, use silica-gel sachets in the storage box, and never put away a saree that feels even slightly damp.
