Wedding Lehenga & Sabyasachi Cleaning: What to Know Before You Store It
Your bridal lehenga is likely the most expensive garment you'll ever own — and the most delicate. Heavy zardozi, kundan, sequins, raw silk and net don't survive ordinary cleaning. Here's how to protect that investment before it goes into storage for years.
Clean it before you store it — always
It's tempting to fold a lehenga away straight after the wedding, but invisible sweat, makeup, food and perfume residue oxidise over months and turn into permanent yellow-brown stains. Sugar-based spills also attract insects. Get bridal wear professionally cleaned within a few weeks of the event, not years later when the damage is done.
Why heavy embellishment needs a specialist
- Zardozi & kundan loosen in water and agitation — they need spot, hand and solvent treatment, never a machine.
- Sequins & plastic beadwork can melt or cloud under standard pressing heat.
- Raw silk and net water-spot and snag easily. Each panel is assessed and cleaned individually — this is not a garment to batch with the weekly wash.
Storing it right
- Wrap in a cotton or muslin cloth, never plastic — trapped moisture yellows fabric and tarnishes zari.
- Store flat or rolled rather than tightly folded, so heavy work doesn't crack along creases. Refold along new lines every few months.
- Add silica-gel sachets and keep it in a dark, dry cupboard away from Bengaluru's monsoon damp.
- Avoid mothballs touching the fabric; tuck in neem leaves instead.
